To start singing scarf songs all you need is scarves! That is really it…well, and maybe some songs. I will give you a list of five songs below to get you started, but realistically you don’t even need songs specifically for scarves. You can just pull out the scarves and let your kids freestyle with them as you sing.
I use the beautiful silk scarves because they are quite large (35inx35in), but you do not need anything fancy. These simple movement scarves will do the trick just as well. In a real pinch, just use a hand towel!
Now, take a look at these songs below and get waving, twirling, and swirling!
Song #1: Wave, Wave, Wave your Scarf
The simplicity of this song makes it a great beginner’s song to introduce to your littles. It is set to the familiar song “Row, Row, Row your Boat.” With just this song you can learn all the fun actions you can do with your scarf: waving, shaking, gliding, twirling, swooping, etc. So many options! Start with this song and then move on to the others!
(Tune: Row, Row, Row, your Boat)
Wave†, wave, wave your scarf,
Wave your scarf with me,
Wave, wave, wave your scarf,
Wave your scarf with me!
† Change this action out for other fun scarf actions (shake, swoop, twirl, etc.)
Song #2: Waving, Waving Little Scarf
This calm scarf song, set to the familiar tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” is a total hit with my little ones! They love waving their scarves high like birds, swirling them low to touch their toes, and creating rainbows with side-to-side movements. The peek-a-boo verse is a favorite, and the fast and slow waving is a great way to burn off some energy! Plus, the final verse encourages them to dance. This allows them an opportunity to freestyle and express some individual creativity
(Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)
Verse 1
Wave your scarf up to the sky,
Waving, waving, way up high.
Twirl it ’round and make it fly,
Like a bird up in the sky.
Wave your scarf up to the sky,
Waving, waving, way up high.
Verse 2
Now bring it down, touch your toes,
Swirl it gently, nice and slow.
Wave it left and wave it right,
Like a rainbow shining bright.
Now bring it down, touch your toes,
Swirl it gently, nice and slow.
Verse 3
Hide it now, where did it go?
Peek-a-boo, let’s make it show!
Wave it fast and wave it slow,
Up and down, and high, then low.
Hide it now, where did it go?
Peek-a-boo, let’s make it show!
Verse 4
Wave your scarf, let’s dance around,
Spin and twirl without a sound.
Wave it here and wave it there,
In the breeze, it floats like air.
Wave your scarf, let’s dance around,
Spin and twirl without a sound.
Song #3: All the Scarves
This adorable scarf song is set to the familiar tune of “Are You Sleeping?”. Each verse uses a different color (red, blue, green). During the last verse everyone participates with all the colorful scarves waving together. Additionally, It’s a fantastic way to get those little bodies moving and exploring colors, all while having a ton of fun! Don’t worry you can change out the colors for purple, pink, yellow…whatever color your children are dancing with.
(Tune: Are you Sleeping?)
Verse 1
Red scarf, red scarf,
Wave it high, wave it high,
See it flying gently,
See it flying gently,
In the sky, in the sky.
Verse 2
Blue scarf, blue scarf,
Twirl around, twirl around,
Watch it spin so slowly,
Watch it spin so slowly,
To the ground, to the ground.
Verse 3
Green scarf, green scarf,
Wave it low, wave it low,
Let it glide so smoothly,
Let it glide so smoothly,
Watch it go, watch it go.
Verse 4
All the scarves, all the scarves,
Colors bright, colors bright,
Wave them all together,
Wave them all together,
What a sight, what a sight!
Song #4: If You Have a Blue Scarf
This is one of the scarf songs I use to help teach and practice taking turns. It works so well to help develop this skill specifically because it is simple and short. Each child can quickly catch onto the pattern because of the simplicity and then doesn’t have to wait too long for their turn to come around because of the length. These two elements combined make it a great song to teach turn-taking. Give each child a scarf and then ask them to stand up and wave their scarf when you sing their color.
(Tune: Mary’s Wearing a Red Dress)
If you have a blue† scarf, blue scarf, blue scarf,
If you have a blue scarf, please stand up!
Wave, wave, wave your scarf, wave your scarf, wave your scarf.
Wave, wave, wave your scarf, then sit down!
†You can repeat this pattern for different scarf colors as needed! For example:
- If you have a red scarf, red scarf, red scarf…
- If you have a yellow scarf, yellow scarf, yellow scarf…
- If you have a green scarf, green scarf, green scarf…
And so on, depending on the color of the scarf each child has.
Song #5: I’m a Little Scarf
This is one of our favorite scarf songs. It’s set to the classic “I’m a Little Teapot” tune, but with lyrics that bring the scarf to life! It also includes all of the standard waving to “left and right”, tossing them high, and watching them “float gently to the floor.” The song perfectly captures the playful spirit of scarf play, encouraging imagination and movement. It’s become a staple in our singing time.
(Tune: I’m a Little Teapot)
Verse 1
I’m a little scarf, so soft and bright,
Wave me to the left, wave me to the right.
When the wind blows, watch me fly,
Up and down and oh so high!
Verse 2
I’m a little scarf, watch me glide,
Swishing and swooping side to side.
When you toss me up, I will soar,
Floating gently to the floor!
I hope these scarf songs have inspired you to start waving, twirling, and swirling with your children! Additionally, it is such a fun activity that will boost your children’s mood. I even sing them sometimes when I am preparing dinner. I just hand them a scarf and let them go for it!
(Secret tip: If you want to go real easy mode just play this song over a speaker and then let your kids follow along.)
