I love the fall season. I love the autumn leaves. I love the holidays in the fall. As always, one of the ways we celebrate and look forward to all the magic the fall season brings in our home is fall and autumn songs!
Whether you’re swaying under the apple tree, jumping in piles of autumn leaves, or admiring little pumpkins in the patch, a fun song can make these moments even more magical.
I hope you find these fall-themed songs a welcome addition to your normal classic fall songs. (Don’t worry, some those classic songs are found at the bottom of this post. We don’t want you and your children missing out on your favorite songs!)
Song #1: I’ve Been Picking all the Apples
(Tune: I’ve Been Working on the Railroad)
The song is super catchy and fun, and it’s such a great way to get them excited about picking apples. The lyrics talk about reaching up high, picking the apples, and even baking pies and making cider with them. All things we do in our family.
Verse 1
I’ve been picking all the apples,
All the live-long day!
I’ve been picking all the apples,
In the orchard where we play.
See the apples in the branches,
Red and green and round,
Come and help me pick the apples,
As they fall to the ground!
(Chorus)
Pick, pick, pick the apples,
Put them in the basket, high!
Pick, pick, pick the apples,
Reach up to the sky!
Verse 2
We’ll bake some pies with all the apples,
Yummy as can be!
We’ll make some cider with the apples,
So sweet for you and me!
When the basket’s full of apples,
We’ll sing and dance with glee,
Come and join me in the orchard,
It’s a happy place to be!
(Chorus)
Pick, pick, pick the apples,
Put them in the basket, high!
Pick, pick, pick the apples,
Reach up to the sky!
Song #2: It’s Autumn Time
(Here is a link to the song’s tune)
I particularly like this song because it helps my kids learn the word “autumn”. There is a lot of songs that use the word fall, but this one switches it up. It helps expand their vocabulary and recognize that there can be multiple words for the same thing.
Verse 1
It’s autumn time, it’s autumn time,
The leaves are falling down.
It’s autumn time, it’s autumn time,
It’s all around the town.
Verse 2
It’s autumn time, it’s autumn time,
There’s yellow, red, and brown.
It’s autumn time, it’s autumn time,
Bright colors can be found.
Verse 3
It’s autumn time, it’s autumn time,
We rake the leaves around.
It’s autumn time, it’s autumn time,
They’re piling on the ground.
Song #3: Mr. Scarecrow
(Tune: Yankee Doodle)
This song is great fun to sing while visiting the pumpkin patch or during circle time in kindergarten classrooms. Sometimes songs about scarecrows can get a little too spooky, but this one is light-hearted and fun!
Verse 1
Scarecrow stands up in the field,
Wearing hats and patches,
Keeping all the crows away,
With boots and old coat latches.
(Chorus)
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, tall and proud,
Waving in the weather,
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, keeps the farm,
Safe and all together!
Verse 2
Scarecrow’s arms are made of sticks,
His shirt is big and baggy,
He waves hello to you and me,
With a grin so happy.
(Chorus)
Verse 3
Scarecrow smiles in the sun,
Standing tall and steady,
He’s always there to guard the farm,
And keeps the fields all ready!
(Chorus)
Song #4: Falling Leaves, Crunchy Leaves
(Tune: Three Blind Mice)
This is such a fun song. This song is such a descriptive song about leaves that there is so much to learn about with your kids as you sing it. I enjoy the first verse, but I really love the second verse. We talk a lot about “crunching” leaves in our house in the fall.
Verse 1
Falling leaves, falling leaves,
Red and gold, red and gold,
Twirling and spinning down to the ground,
Blowing and swirling all around,
Such a sight without a sound,
Falling leaves, falling leaves.
Verse 2
Crunchy leaves, crunchy leaves,
On the ground, on the ground,
Jump in the pile and hear the crunch,
Laugh and play as you hear them scrunch,
What a fun and happy bunch!
Crunchy leaves, crunchy leaves.
Song #5: A Pumpkin, A Pumpkin
(Tune: A Tisket, A Tasket)
This is a perfect short song to learn with a fall theme. Its a little song about picking pumpkins and making them into pumpkin pie — the perfect autumn treat. Also a great song to sing on your way to the pumpkin patch…and home!
Because of the light tune and bouncy rhythm of this song, it is also a great one to practice a little bit of skipping with your child. Be patient if this is the first time you have tried a little bit of skipping. It is a tough skill, but a good one to learn to expand those gross motor skills!
Verse 1
A pumpkin, a pumpkin,
So round and orange and bright,
We picked it from the garden patch,
Oh, what a lovely sight!
Verse 2
A pumpkin, a pumpkin,
We’ll bake a tasty pie,
We’ll cook it up with spices sweet,
A treat for you and I!
