Singing songs with children’s names is a great way to engage and recognize each individual child. For the earliest learners it helps them recognize their own name and as they grow, name songs can help them develop social skills as they learn the names of their classmates and friends.
Each simple song below can be as a welcome song or a fun way to even re-engage kids during a singing group or circle time. Additional welcome songs with links are listed at the bottom of this post.
Song #1: ______ came to sing today
(Tune: Mary had a Little Lamb)
This song is set to the nursery rhyme “Mary had a Little Lamb”. It is a great song to say good morning to everyone in your class or your kids at at home.
Alex*came to sing today,
Sing today, sing today,
Alex* came to sing today,
Hip, hip, HOORAY!
*Change out with child’s name when it is their turn
Song #2: Here we are Together
(Tune: The More we get Together)
This song is set to the popular tune “The More we get Together” with a just a couple of tweaks to get a large group of kids involved. It is great to learn classmates’ names.
Here we are together, together, together,
Here we are together, at our singing time**
With Lucy*, and James,* and [add other names*],
Here we are together, at our singing time
*Use children’s names from your group
** You can change out this phrase too (e.g. in our circle time, in our 1st grade class, etc.)
Song #3: Will You Stand Up?
This short song is set to a catchy tune that kids will catch on to real quick. During the first line of this next song each child stands up when it is their turn. This gets them involved and looking forward to their turn…and teaches them to WAIT their turn. For your younger children this may take just a little bit of practice.
Alex* will you stand up
And let us see your smile?
We’re glad you’re here today
Won’t you stay awhile!
*Use child’s name
Song #4: Hi, Hello, and What’s your Name?
(Tune: London Bridges Falling Down)
I love this little song. It helps children learn to introduce themselves to their friends. It is so simple and easy to learn. The very last phrase each child can take a turn saying individually to introduce themselves. This helps them get over a little bit of shyness.
For your littlest learners they will pick up on “Hi” and “Hello” and waving. This is a great age appropriate skill for them to learn.
Hi, hello, and what’s your name?
What’s your name? What’s your name?
Hi, hello, and what’s your name? *My name is, Alex.
*Have each child take a turn saying their name.
